4th Grade - Report
Date: Saturday 21st July 2012 - Kick Off: 10:25
League
| Northern Suburbs RFC | vs | Sydney University |
SYDNEY UNI 13 - 3 NORTHS
This weeks team:
Angus Whitehead, Ash Hall, James Knight, Rory Collins, Keith Coassin, Simon Johnson, Joe McEhlone, James Fitzgerald, Joe Jenkins, Sam Palmer, Scott Rumble, Nick Marshall, James Nakkan, Pat Nakkan, Scott Barnes.
This will be the first big test for this team since the Gordon match some time ago. Timing is good as we head down the home straight towards the finals. It will either be a wake up call or a confirmation that we have everything together. Either way I don’t anticipate much between the two teams.
The team has one change to the program. James Knight comes in for Ed Moss.
Conditions are reasonable but very cold. We have just seen a solid win to the Norths Fifth Grade team.
James Fitzgerald gets play underway with a big solid run up field. He is so big and strong. Where in the family does he get it from!
James Nakkan kicks into the far corner and Norths have a chance to attack. Norths are running south to North. Norths attack but a knock on and the movement comes to a halt.
Penalty to Norths and Nakko puts the ball deep into University territory. A second chance to attack. A turnover and University are back up field in a flash.
A hit from behind on a Norths player goes unnoticed by the referee but not by some of the crowd who make their opinions known to the referee and the linesman.
A knock on by Norths 5 metres out from their line. Uni attack and are held up over the line.
A forward pass by University and Norths get the ball and we move play up field.
Our rock solid defence lets us down as University scores the softest of tries running between two defending players without a hand being placed on him. So the scoreboard starts ticking Norths 0-7.
A penalty now to Uni and they put the ball over the dot. Norths 0-10.
We see some try-saving tackles. None better than that of Scott Rumble.
It is not coming together for Norths today with a number of knock ons and turnovers.
Another try-saving tackle this time by Scott Barnes.
A penalty this time to Norths and Golden Boots puts the ball over the black dot. Norths 3 Uni 10.
The half time bells rings and the side line reporter says, ”Too many simple handling errors.”
Play is underway. Not content with just tackling the opposition Rory Collins and Keith Coassin collide with a bone shuddering thud.
We see some strategic kicks now by both teams from one end of the field to the other.
The game is not flowing and does not have that magical quality that gives it entertainment value. Too many players playing one out and too many passes that should not have been passed.
A penalty to Norths but they opt for the line out. Guess that was the right decision. We attack but turn over the ball.
A penalty to Sydney University and they convert the points.
Final score: Norths 3 Sydney University 13
CROWEY’s COMMENTS:
To say the boys were pumped for this game was an understatement. It was quite emotional before the game in the room and the boys took it straight out on the field.
This game was one that we all knew came down to defence and who made the least amount of errors in their own 22. Well the answer to this one is simple. Norths won this statistic by a mile. In general our handling was way below our standards and unfortunately for us they all seemed to occur in our own half. Timing, communication and direction just wasn’t there as has been the case in the past. We seem to have a cancer in our team that we have been focused on for quite a few weeks now, being ONE OUT RUNNING. We cannot keep this habit in our game for much longer otherwise the gutted feeling we had after the game will be a regular occurrence. If we do not penetrate the defensive line in 2’s and 3’s by latching and hammering we cannot gain the momentum we want to then score tries.
To put it simply, we have already learned from this. We spoke as one after the game in our team huddle on the 22m of Bon Andrews Oval where we made so many errors. Yes, it has given us a reality check. A reality check that I believe will be of great benefit for us when we reach the finals. You must always learn from the negatives in rugby to achieve your positives.
If we were to play that bad at probably 50% of our benchmark standard, all I can say is God help Uni when we face them again next time.
We will iron out the creases that were prevalent on the weekend and direct all of our focus now on Easts. A very solid team in all aspects of the game, they are going to confront a Norths team hungry to win back our top spot we so rightly deserve.
Stay strong brother,
CROWEY
