Norths went into this match as slight favourites against a Uni side that had lost against Manly in the first round of finals matches. Norths, running into a stiff wind, started well with an early try to fullback Liam Windon and led 10 points to 6 at the break. Significantly they were bashing Uni at the breakdown. With the wind at their backs in the second half, they were in with a good chance of getting to the grand final.

In the second half, Uni stepped up their own aggression at the breakdown. Norths responded but the game was now more even. Tries were shared (Norths by Anthony Shortis) and the score was 17-13 to Norths with 20 minutes to go. Norths had their chances to put the game beyond doubt in the next 10 minutes and although they went close they could not get that vital next try.

Uni scored a converted try after a defensive lapse by Norths to go up 20-17 with five minutes left on the clock. Norths again had their chances in the final minutes and were camped on Uni’s line as the full time siren sounded.

This was a game that maybe got away – even the Uni coaches couldn’t believe their side had won.

It did appear that Norths were not aided by the week off – the strong play shown in the first finals match against Randwick was missing for some of this game and especially in the second half.

Overall, the season has been a success for the team. There is a core of very promising players in this side that will step up next season for higher grade appearances.
