SRU Premiership Competition - Henderson Shield (3rd Grade)
| Northern Suburbs | vs | Warringah |
NORTHS 19 - 3 WARRINGAH
Norths ran into the wind in the first half and they struggled early to get any combination going. Warringah’s kicking game kept Norths pegged in their own half. Some poor kicking by Norths and a series of infringements gave Warringah a chance. A penalty goal took Warringah to an early 3-0 lead.
Norths were struggling to get momentum against a keen Warring defence. It took a run from centre Charlie Versi to spark the Norths attack and soon after James Nakkan made a great break taking the ball deep into Warringah’s quarter. While his inside pass went to ground, Norths were able to regather and swing it quickly to the other wing. Anthony Shortis with some room to move at last beat his man and went over for a good Norths try. With a great conversion from the sideline by Henry Fisher, Norths were up 7-3.
At halftime the score remained 7-3 to Norths but there were at least two god scoring opportunities missed in the minutes leading up to the break. Norths finished the half well on top but only four points ahead on the score board.
Norths started the second half how they finished off the first. They were creating chances in attack but were finding ways to blow them. Their lineout was not on song and this and some wayward passes kept Warringah in the game. The only compensation for Norths was that Warringah was as bad at finishing.
Finally an attacking move by Norths was completed – Charlie Versi made a good break from halfway – he gave the ball to his centre partner James Bender who gave it to winger James Nakkan. As James was tackled he popped the ball back to James Bender who went over for a good Norths try. The conversion was missed but Norths were out to 12-3.
As so often happens with this side lately, that try was quickly followed by another as the team started to find their attacking rhythm. Again it was the Versi/Bender show with Charlie making a break and as he was tackled popping the ball off the deck to his centre partner James Bender who went over his second try in as many minutes. With the conversion Norths were clearly home at 19-3 and ruing the missed opportunities for a fourth try bonus point.
This team has a lot of attacking ability – they just seem to need to be patient and trust their team mates and the points will come.
