WEST HARBOUR 27 - 16 NORTHS
Game Summary
The Norths second grade team needed to pick themselves up after a tough loss to Eastwood in the Round 16 game. Their defence on that day was not up to scratch and a step-up improvement in this area was to be a focus in this game.
In a tight first half at Parramatta Rugby Park on Sunday, the score was 6-3 to West Harbour after 30 minutes. The Norths team had started slowly but were gaining an ascendency in the forwards as the half progressed and the team was unlucky as the West Harbour first try came very much against the run of play and had some questions about it. At the break West Harbour were up 11-3 but Norths would have fancied their chances with the breeze in the second half.
Norths certainly played the better football for the first 15 minutes of the second half and with a brace of penalties they brought the score to 11-9. They had chances to go to the lead but some wrong option taking stymied a number of attacks. These lost opportunities were compounded when two defensive lapses in the next 10 minutes saw West Harbour score two tries and go to a 23-9 lead. Wests then kicked a penalty to go out by 17 points with 12 minutes to play.
Norths responded with a well-worked try started when number 7 Mat Lamont made a break about 45 metres out. He was able to get the ball to replacement number 8 James FitzGerald who got the final pass to replacement fullback Liam Windon who went over adjacent to the posts.
With the conversion Norths had closed the gap to 10 points but this would be the end of the scoring and the end of the season for this gallant team. Injuries and sickness has taken its toll on the personnel in this team. As has been the case in a number of recent games the side looked the more complete football team again today but defensive lapses gave away too many points. It may have been a disappointing end but overall the team had put up a much improved effort for the season.
Scorers for Norths:
Liam Windon try, Sam Myers a conversion and 3 penalties.
Team: Lawrance Hunting, Tom Lamont, James Smith, Josh Spreag, Matt White, Tim Fitzgerald, Mat Lamont, Terito Marekura, Liam Walker, Jack Freeman, Isaiah Mosese, Lachlan Porteous, Elih Baillie, Trent Lake, Sam Myers
Replacements: Karl Truijens, James FitzGerald, Nic Curtis, Liam Windon
