10 QUESTIONS WITH ZACK HOLMES

10 QUESTIONS WITH ZACK HOLMES image

This week Norths Rugby has caught up with Brumbies new recruit and last season's top point scorer, Zack Holmes.

Tell us about your early Rugby career growing up in Perth?

I had a rugby ball in my hand from a young age as my dad is a Kiwi so it was something that I played from a young age. I did play other sports including AFL and soccer but rugby was always my biggest passion.

Who have been the major influences on your rise to Professional Rugby?

Have been a lot of people who have helped along the way but the three biggest influences would be my Dad, Michael O’Conner and Scott Fava. Both Snoz and Sex have allowed me to improve my game and have that belief to back myself.

Since the Force joined the Competition in 2006, what effect has this had on the Development of Rugby in Western Australia?

I think it has been good in that it provides junior players with a pathway to professional rugby. The local competition has improved but I think the biggest improvement is definitely in the junior programs, which are now in place. You now are seeing more local Western Australian boys coming through.

Being a Sevens Rep Player, how much potential do you see in the game now that it will feature in the 2016 Rio Olympics?

Sevens is getting bigger every year and I believe will continue to do so with it now being an olympic sport. Many countries now have fully contracted sevens squads which spend all year together. The excitement of the games will continue to draw crowds and I think in Australia we will start to see more specialised sevens players.

Having played around the World on the 7s circuit, what was your favourite tournament?

Favourtie tournament for me was Hong Kong. The crowd is electric and there is also a lot of sevens history there. It’s the tournament that everyone wants to win as it is the most prestigious.

What made you choose Norths when you moved to Sydney?

I spoke to a few clubs and the thing about Norths which I really liked was that there is opportunity for guys. Scotty was positive that if you perform you will be picked in grade and as a younger player that’s what you want to hear.

How much time per week would you spend on your goal kicking?

I'm goal kicking every day at the moment usually for about 20-30 minutes after sessions. Have been trying a few new things but is something that I really enjoy doing.

Having played outside half, wing and full back for Norths last season, what do you see as your favoured position and do you see versatility as a positive?

I enjoy getting my hands on the ball as much as possible so if had to choose would say 10 but in the end you just want to be making that starting XV. The way most backlines work now you are moving around quite a bit during a game anyway.

What are your hopes for 2012?

Just to keep improving during pre season and to get into the 22 for the super season.

Who would win a race over 10 metres between yourself, Crawford and Sio?

Would back myself in, although would be tight!
